20世纪50年代，“21点大满贯”是美国最叫座的电视益智游戏节目，成千上万的观众被它吸引。常胜冠军赫伯·斯坦普尔（约翰·特托罗 John Turturro饰）已经连续多次夺魁，但是电视台老板觉得他已经失去了新鲜感，下令节目制片人丹·恩莱特（大卫·佩默 David Paymer饰）寻找新人顶替。哥伦比亚大学优等生查尔斯·范·多伦（拉尔夫·费因斯 Ralph Fiennes饰）被丹相中，而查尔斯顺理成章地成为新一届的卫冕者。当观众们都被他博学多闻的机智回答所迷倒时，国会议员迪克·古德温（罗伯·莫洛 Rob Morrow饰）怀疑节目中存在着舞弊行为。经过详细调查取证后，惊天黑幕也正在慢慢浮出水面。 由知名奥斯卡获奖导演罗伯特·雷德福执导的影片《机智问答》，取材自20世纪50年代美国电视圈的真实事件。导演深刻地描绘了这宗当年最大的电视丑闻案，荣获1995年第67届奥斯卡金像奖最佳影片提名、最佳导演提名及最佳男配角提名。。故事发生在上世纪七十年代初期。上山下乡运动如火如荼，庄会生（史天庚 饰）因暗恋叶晓帆（王媛可 饰），偷改志愿，结果事与愿违，独自去了陕北，而叶晓帆、乔海洋（张译 饰）等人则分配到东北建设兵团。纨绔子弟段军对叶一见倾心，但叶只对海洋有好感。范学东（刘向京 饰）心胸狭窄，一次次给开朗乐观的海洋下套，但都被大嘴连长（程煜 饰）解围。刘北上（王桂峰 饰）与海洋亲如兄弟，他喜欢上郑红梅（沈傲君 饰），而红梅暗恋的却是乔海洋。叶晓帆对段军的骚忧防不胜防，为此海洋与他大打出手，但最终晓帆还是落入段军设下的圈套，被其强奸致孕，自杀时被招工回城的庄会生救下，闻讯后的乔海洋彻底绝望......。In this bitingly satirical film Peter Slovan, a continuous source of trouble for the film functionaries of the socialist Slovakia, tackles an evergreen topic – the corruptive effects of power. Barnabáš Kos, a triangle player at a symphonic orchestra, is suddenly promoted to serve as the head of the said institution, even though both he and his superiors deem him completely unfit for the task. Encouraged in equal parts by this unexpected recognition and the servile praise of his colleagues, Kos’s modesty starts to gradually vanish. The erstwhile bashful and aloof percussionist quickly becomes aware of the advantages of his new office, and begins to realise his increasingly ludicrous artistic ambitions. Ultimately, the submissive marionette turns into a source of public humiliation, and his astonishing career finds an abrupt end. Orchestra serves here as a microcosm that grotesquely reflects the absurd and tragicomic mechanisms of the paranoid apparatus of power.
