民国初年，平津一带有两个红伶，一是文武小生秋汉堂，一是坤伶罗香琦，他们在台上经常扮演一对，感情深厚，准备不久便结为夫妻。阮宝帆是个大军阀，当他看到罗香琦美貌绝伦，登时神为之夺。阮宝帆太太虽多却无半男一女，当香琦诞下一女，阮以买来一子换去此女。十几年后其女梅宝已亭亭玉立，且因卖唱认识表兄罗绍华，遂得与母香琦相认……。Birdcatcher Esmar and his wife Johanna face eviction from their farm in Gásadalur unless they have a son. Desperation sets in when Johanna gives birth to their third daughter. Pushed to the brink, Johanna is impregnated by another man, a French Captain, and gives birth to a son, known as ‘the birdcatcher’s son’. Everything seems perfect until the French Captain returns.。
