原恵一の劇場作品初監督にして原点とも言うべき作品。子供受けはあまりよくなかったと言われており、原も『アニメーション監督原恵一』（晶文社、2005年）に収録されたインタビューで、自分が見た際に観客の子供が外に出て行ったと語っている[14]。 原作のエピソード「人形が泣いた!?」をベースにしつつ、こけし座の座長を青年にしたり、人形をなくした少女・めぐみのエピソードといったオリジナル要素を交え、中編として再構成されている。当時、廃止を控えていた宇高連絡船が登場する場面がある。 ふとしたことから、人形劇団「こけし座」と知り合った魔美は子供たちに夢を与える彼らの姿に感動する。翌日、人形をなくして泣いている女の子・めぐみと出会った魔美は人形を探す約束をするが、それにはある秘密があった。魔美はこけし座の青年たちとめぐみに元気をとり戻そうとする。しかし、そのこけし...。Based on a concept album project written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, and the subsequent long-running Broadway performance, this film tells the story of the final 6 days in the life of Jesus Christ through the troubled eyes of Judas Iscariot.
