尽管16岁时吴宇森便辍学参加工作，但自幼培养的对电影的热情，却通过在图书馆、书店钻研大量电影理论书籍变得更加投入。这期间，他已经在和一群志同道合的青年拍摄实验电影了。1971年他加入邵氏公司，担任大师张彻的副导，参与制作了《刺马》、《水浒传》等一系列卖座名片，学到了许多专业技巧，而张彻阳刚惨烈的风格更对其产生了深远影响。 在张彻身边呆了几年之后，吴宇森跳槽嘉禾，升为导演正职。1975年处女作《铁汉柔情》上映，票房惨败，同年另一部《女子跆拳群英会》仍不卖座。现在看来，这两部由后来大红大紫的成龙担任动作指导的跟风打斗片，在昔日功夫片泛滥的时代的确没甚可观之处，票房失利倒也在情理之中。 1976年，吴宇森决定改变风格，导演了一部粤语古装歌舞片《帝女花》。虽有1959年的经典版本在前，但该片仍取得了巨大成功，票房收入名列当年第四位，大胜张彻、李翰...。A down-on-his-luck farmer makes a deal with the devil for seven years of prosperity.
